Need help deciding between Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Pro? Here’s a quick summary of the differences.

Pro features not offered in Home:

  • Create and join a domain (work network)
  • BitLocker – Microsoft has improved the encryption software in Windows 10 Pro. “With BitLocker,” says Joe Belfiore, the Corporate Vice President of Microsoft’s Operating Systems Group, “the end user faces an all or nothing decision for the entire drive to be encrypted, and it doesn’t provide for very much flexibility in the way files move around. We’re solving those problems.” Now users can encrypt individual files and keep them with non-encrypted files.
  • Group policy management
  • Remote Desktop Connection – While Home can start a RDC connection, only computers running Pro can be controlled remotely (Home PCs can only be assisted remotely).
  • Hyper-V (virtualization)
  • Assigned Access
  • Enterprise Mode Internet Explorer
  • Windows Store for Business
  • Trusted Boot
  • Windows Update for Business – You have the ability to defer updates. On Home, you can only stop them for a few hours.

Max supported RAM:

  • Home: 128 GB
  • Pro: 2 TB

“While Windows 10 Home is focused firmly on the consumer, Windows 10 Pro is more for power-users, and those running small to medium businesses.”
